How clear intuition can save you time, frustration and valuable energy.

Everyone one has intuition. Call it a hunch, a gut feeling or an instinct – we all have it and if you’re an entrepreneur it can be an invaluable tool.

Intuition has guided me to:

  • Connect with other amazing entrepreneurs
  • Break up with a client before the sh*t hits the fan
  • Create space and freedom to enjoy life
  • Know who needs support and provide it
  • Improve my health (goodbye migraines!)

Definition of intuition – Merriam-Webster

1 : quick and ready insight

2 : the power or faculty of attaining direct knowledge or cognition without evident rational thought and inference

How does that help you, as a hard-working solopreneur, in your business?

Here’s a quote from Apple co-founder Steve Jobs:

“I began to realize that an intuitive understanding and consciousness was more significant than abstract thinking and intellectual logical analysis. Intuition is a very powerful thing, more powerful than intellect, in my opinion. That’s had a big impact on my work.”

Using Intuition Versus Logic

As entrepreneurs we can get wrapped up in numbers, analytics and logic based information. Society has conditioned us to operate from logic.

Logic can only take you so far, then you might run into feeling stuck or perplexed when a challenge arises.

It’s important to remain focused on the bigger vision. Customers and clients are responding to “The Now”. It’s your responsibility to guide them towards their bigger vision.

When you feel like you’re not doing enough in your business, ask yourself this; are you sabotaging your success?

Intuition responds with guidance while the ego will continue to create false impressions.

There are four types of ways that intuition shows up:

Clair-audience – sound or hearing

Clairvoyance – sight

Clair-sentience – feelings

Clair-cognizance – knowing

Clair-olifactant – smell

Let’s dig a bit deeper into the concept of intuition…

When I became a teenager, I had no idea what intuition was. On my 16th birthday I received a book called “Anatomy of The Spirit” by Caroline Myss.

“[Intuition] is the capacity to perceive instead of to see… It’s the capacity to sense and interpret what you just sensed and make sense of it. Whenever we’re doing something that’s not on target, our intuition always begins to pulsate inside of us and tells us that the way we are moving is not accurate, because intuition is always about truth.” ~ Caroline Myss

After reading the book my awareness began to expand as my mind was opening up to new concepts. It was an exciting and sad time as I let go of my current ideas of high-school based reality.

The exciting part came when I began to pay attention to the signs and hints that had been there all along. The frequency of my dreams increased, I had visions and insights to help friends and family.

How do you know it’s your intuition guiding you?

Intuition will have a calm certainty about it.

Intuitive Life Strategist and best-selling author, Robert Ohotto says:

“Intuition will guide you, it’ll guide you to an action of service or an action of awakening or an action of self love”

In this post, I’m diving into five ways to improve your intuition so you can create success in your business.

1. Meditation

Let’s face it, you or I do not make good entrepreneurial decisions when we’re overwhelmed or confused. A clear mind will benefit your well-being and your business.

Meditation gives the brain a chance to get out of an active state. Thinking and problem solving operate in an active state – Beta waves. Meditation brings you into a relaxed and calm state – Alpha waves.

Traditional meditation: sitting cross-legged on the floor, eyes closed. If you have an active mind like I do, a horizontal position works better for meditation. Traditional meditation methods don’t work for everyone. Instead try a repetitive physical activity like running.

Other examples of meditative physical activity:

  • Cleaning the house (even vacuuming can be meditative!)
  • Arts & crafts
  • Solo sports

How does this help your business?

  • Clears the mind so that you can make better decisions
  • Gets you out of feeling stuck
  • Releases the overwhelm, getting you back into a calm state

2. Writing

Jess Lively, of the popular podcast ‘The Lively Show’, talks about writing to your intuition. This allows the ego to get out of the way so that your intuition can come through uninterrupted. This is a great way to get clarity when you’re feeling stuck.

Daily “brain dumps” – emptying the mind of random thoughts to start the day with a clear mind. Check out Productivity specialist Mike Vardy’s post on “How To Do The Ultimate Brain Dump”.

Journaling – writing down what you’re grateful for can be beneficial to your well-being. Doing so will bring awareness to all the good in your life. Also, you can keep track of the intuitive guidance you get and see how it communicates.

How does this help your business?

  • Notice how your intuition shows up and use it every day in your business to get results
  • Appreciate where you are currently in your business
  • Allow space for new ideas and inspirations

3. Self-awareness

What is it that you value most? If you’re unsure of your values take a look at your fears for contrast. Do you fear being alone? One of your values may be connection through relationships. Do you fear failure? One of your values may be freedom. Observe, notice, be aware of your fears and how they can be an insight into the things you value most.

Know Yourself: practice noticing when you’re in resistance to something and why.
Identify your patterns: are they holding you back or allowing you to stay open to new opportunities?
Practice taking leaps of faith.

Often the ego can resort to self sabotage when we take a step out of our comfort zone.

Self sabotage showed up for me when I decided to record a podcast with my BFF. Everything was great up until the day before we recorded our first episode. I woke up with a sore throat. I thought I was getting sick, but as soon as we recorded the first episode my sore throat magically disappeared. Hmm…

How does this help your business?

  • Prevent mental blocks by recognizing the ways in which you sabotage yourself
  • The more you get to know yourself, the more you can get done (ie. what time of day are you most creative?)

4. Mindset

The mind is a hamster wheel of thoughts, beliefs and noise. Negative thoughts can take over if you’re not paying attention. When you dismiss or downplay your strengths/talents/gifts/skills, creative blocks materialize.

Not being true to yourself or giving in to the “imposter complex” will have an impact on you and your business.

“As a man thinks, feels and believes, so is the condition of his mind, body, and circumstances”

– Dr Joseph Murphy, The Power of Your Subconscious Mind

Visualization is also a tool you can use to reset the mind and stir up creativity and imagination. It allows you to see and feel what it would be like to achieve your goals.

How does this help your business?

  • Keeps you focused on your goals
  • A clear mind helps you make decisions and choices without second guessing yourself

5. De-conditioning your BS (Belief Systems)

As a child you were probably taught to behave in a certain way. That way might have been counter-intuitive to your . As an adult you become aware of thoughts.

Karen Curry Parker, Human Design Specialist says,

“One of the greatest sources of pain in life is the disconnect between the self you perceive yourself to be and the authentic self”.

Depending on your Human Design chart, you may experience one or more of these influences in your life: fear of inadequacy, fear of the future, fear of the past, or fear of failing.

Recognizing how you’ve conditioned yourself to respond to your fears is an eye opener.

How does this help your business?

  • Get clear on who you truly are and your confidence will rise
  • Gives you permission to make empowered decisions
  • Finding clarity, getting answers to your problems

When you’re feeling stuck or overwhelmed in your business – it’s possible to get back on track and find clarity again. The road ahead might not be easy but you can do it!

Improving your intuition benefits all areas of your life and increases confidence. If it seems overwhelming, take only one step today. A five minute mini-meditation, a journal entry of five things you’re grateful for – every step counts!
